There is an old Bengali saying that goes “Educating your daughter is like watering another man’s fields.” Women in Bangladesh play traditional roles such as homemakers and caregivers, are given less food, receive minimal education, and are constantly seen as a burden. To support these women, a holistic approach, with access to counselling, legal aid, vocational training and safe housing, is essential.
Background
How might we dismantle cultural norms in Bangladesh that devalue women and create a safer and more empowering environment for women?
Problem Statement
Bangladeshi women experiencing various forms of domestic abuse, ranging from emotional manipulation to physical violence. These are people who long for safety, and selfempowerment and require the resources to build independent lives free from abuse.
Target Audience
A gym that empowers women escaping domestic violence with tools for safety, healing and financial independence.
Solution
Development
I started by creating a mood and style board emphasising on community, empowerment and resilience. I decided to take inspiration from women's protest posters. I looked to GenWest for inspiration for the gym’s website.
